Physical Therapy That Works

At Bedford Physical Therapy & Fitness we take a holistic approach to your rehabilitation.  We focus on you as an individual with a body that is interdependent on the rest of the body not just a specific injury.  We rehabilitate your injury, but we take it further and assess "why" you have the injury so that you can prevent further injuries.  For many individuals you may be referred to or seeking physical therapy for pain reduction or limited motion with a diagnosis of arthritis or tendinitis.  "Itis" at its root, means inflammation and is usually a result of "over use" or "overloading" of a joint or tendon.  This is usually a result of an imbalance of strength and flexibility in another area of the body that causes an increased loading and stress on the area where you have the injury.

When working with our therapists, you are not going to be only performing exercises.  Our therapist are trained to be hands-on with specialties in Manual Therapy Techniques and Integrative Dry Needling.  Exercises and stretches are important, but we believe that your alignment and your muscles/tissue must first be functioning well.  All of us know the saying that "practice makes perfect," but in reality "perfect practice makes perfect."  If you perform your exercises, but your alignment and your muscle tissue is not functioning well you are not going to improve your injury and will be risking re-injury in the future.  Our strategy is to help you have proper function of your muscles and tissue then perform exercises to stabilize and support the improvements through manual techniques and dry needling.

Our specialties are in musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, golf/running performance and rehabilitation.  We also help with balance and vestibular deficiencies as well as pre and post surgery.

Our Therapists have Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degrees and have continuing education and certifications in Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), Integrative Dry Needling (CIDN), and Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf and Medical Pro certifications and Certified in Manipulation.

Our Membership option gives you the ability to continue guided exercises and fitness, monitor you health risks, and manage your stress which are significant influences on your outcomes after injury and in prevention of injury.

Pain Management

Physical Therapy is one of the most efficient and non-invasive medical treatments for pain management and chronic pain. Often, in the past, the first route of medical treatment was pharmaceuticals including pain medications such as opioids. Over time it has been shown that opioids are not the best option and are not only addicting, but also have many negative side effects. As medicine has moved away from opioids, research has shown that physical therapy is one of the most successful treatments. Movement is a proven method in reducing pain, but chronic pain is often more than just an injury and is much more complicated. In some cases the original injury has already healed, but the brain has not accepted this and is still triggering a pain response. In other cases, a fear of re-injuring creates an anxiety and decrease in physical activity. At our clinic we have the specialty and unique ability to offer Manual therapy, dry needling, exercise guidance and mindfulness/meditation to help you improve your pain and overall wellness.

Spinal Manipulation

A spinal manipulation can be a very useful tool in a treatment plan to improve range of motion and decrease pain.  Our physical therapist will perform diagnostic testing and screening to determine if a spinal manipulation is safe and appropriate. Certain medical diagnoses that may benefit from a spinal manipulation include neck, mid back, low back, shoulder and cervicogenic headache pain. A spinal manipulation is a high velocity, low amplitude thrust which often results in an audible "pop". Our physical therapists have received extensive training through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy.

Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a highly effective form of physical therapy for a multitude of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. This treatment utilizes your own body's ability to heal. Conditions treated include but are not limited to neck, back and shoulder pain, arm pain (Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel), headaches including migraines and tension type headaches, jaw pain, buttock pain and leg pain (sciatica, calf pain, strains/spasms/tendinitis).

Balance and Dizziness Rehabilitation

Many of us do not realize how vital balance is to our function and our risk of injury.  Our balance is influenced by our vestibular system, visual system, and our proprioceptive system (our body's awareness of where it is in space).  Physical therapy can help improve all of these systems.  Sometimes our lack of balance is very apparent with episodes of vertigo or dizziness but other times it may be the cause of neck pain while running or increased knee pain.  We can help with your balance including diagnosis such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

Manual Therapy

Is a form of treatment used in physical therapy to help improve tissue function.  Manual therapy is a hands on use of mobilization and massage techniques to help reduce muscle tightness, improve muscle function, improve range of motion and correct alignment.  Your steps to improvement start with correcting alignment and improve tissue function and then supported with strength exercises to stabilize and stretching exercises to improve mobility.  We need both stability and mobility for successful movement and body function.  Many of our injuries are due to imbalances in our body causing excessive loading on joints or tissue that were not designed to handle the stress we apply to those areas.

Running Evaluations and Rehabilitation

Running is more than just one foot in front of the other.  Many injuries in running can be a result of balance issues, flexibility issues, and strength issues, causing abnormal loading on joints and tissues which overtime causes a break down (injury).  Improving your running mechanics and having a running evaluation can help prevent injury and make your running more efficient.  We have over 30 years of running experience with continued focus and passion toward helping runners improve their speed, endurance, and reduce injury as well as recover from injury.

Golf Performance and Rehabilitation

You may have an injury related to golf or it may be an injury from something else, but is keeping you from golfing.  Whether you golf 1 day a week or 7 days a week if you are passionate about golf, your goal is to get better and start golfing again.  In many cases physical therapy can be your best and most successful option for a timely return to your sport.  You will have an opportunity to work with a physical therapist certified and trained through the Titleist Performance Institute to analyze your swing and your body movement.
